It might not have been at the identical stature as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.

“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future without fear.”

The gathering, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.

The swine, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.

A Peaceful Retirement

The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.

“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.

“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”

Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
