Tehran reports attacking a US naval base in Bahrain, as Iran launched missile attacks across the region in retaliation for a large-scale and continuing attack targeting the nation by the US and Israel.

Large columns of dark smoke were observed billowing from an area near the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The full scale of any destruction is unclear and the United States has not commented.

Regional Interceptions

Elsewhere across the region, the United Arab Emirates, the State of Qatar and the State of Kuwait - each hosting American military installations - reported they have intercepted missiles in their airspace.

In Doha, Qatar's defence ministry said it had successfully engaged a number of projectiles seemingly aimed at the Al Udeid Air Base, the biggest US military installation in the Middle East.

Iran's Declared Retaliation

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement it was targeting US bases and assets as part of operation "Truthful Promise 4", in response for the offensive on Iran initiated by the United States and its ally Israel on Saturday morning.

That US-Israeli operation - executed at around 06:15 GMT - has so far targeted sites associated with the Iranian leadership, with President Trump calling on the Iranian people to revolt against the leadership.

Regional Fallout

In the State of Israel, sirens were heard across the country after the Israeli military said it had detected an barrage of missiles from Iran.

The Ministry of Defence of the UAE said in a statement that the country has been subjected to a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"Emirati air defenses dealt with the projectiles with high efficiency and shot down a series of missiles," it added.

The statement noted wreckage fell on a populated district in Abu Dhabi, resulting in some material damage and fatalities.

The United States Air Force operates from Al Dhafra Air Base, to the south of Abu Dhabi, along with the UAE Air Force.
