Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for United

The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Attack

The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:

  1. The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
