The Academy Awards will begin streaming exclusively on the global video platform in 2029, signaling the most recent significant shift in Hollywood.

The organization behind the Oscars revealed the news on Wednesday, indicating that it entered into a long-term agreement giving the streaming service the unique international license to the Oscars up to 2033.

The awards show, set for March 15th, has aired for five decades on the traditional network. Beginning in 2029, the ceremony will be available live and for free on YouTube.

It's one more significant upheaval in Hollywood, which is grappling with corporate acquisitions and consolidations, coupled with steep slashes to movie budgets.

"The Academy is an international organization, and this alliance will permit us to expand access to the activities of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience imaginable - which will be positive for our Academy members and the film community," remarked the Academy's executives in a release.

Over decades, viewership of the awards show have dropped, though there was a small rise in 2025, with a notable portion of younger viewers tuning in from smartphones and desktops.

In a separate statement, the video platform's chief executive described the Oscars "among our essential pillars of culture" and said that partnering with the Academy would "inspire a new generation of innovation and movie fans while remaining faithful to the Oscars' celebrated legacy".

ABC, which has aired the ceremony since the mid-1970s, stated that it was looking forward "to the upcoming broadcasts" it will continue to air.

This decision coincides with major studios face complex corporate battles. These potential deals were seen as problematic for an sector that has witnessed drastic cuts over the past several years.

Like major studios, traditional TV channels have struggled as the public has chosen on-demand video instead.

The platform securing the license to the Oscars clearly signals that reliance on digital platforms will carry on increasing.
