Two Individuals Arrested Over Phone Concealed in House of Commons to Reportedly Play Inappropriate Sounds At PMQs

Police have arrested a duo of individuals in connection with a cellular device discovered concealed within the House of Commons, which was reportedly designed to play inappropriate audio during the weekly parliamentary session.

Finding and Probe

The device was uncovered near the government benches in the course of a routine sweep of the chamber. Authorities suspect it was planned to disrupt the regular debate between political leaders in the autumn month.

A police spokesperson commented, “At 10.25 on Wednesday 3 September, a mobile phone was found during a standard inspection of the House of Commons chamber.”

Detentions and Charges

Investigations led officers to believe that the device was purposely placed in a location with the intention of causing disruption to business in the chamber.

  • An individual in his 30s was arrested on that Friday on suspicion of trying to deliberately cause a disturbance.
  • Another man in his sixties was taken into custody on Tuesday 30 September on suspicion of the same offence.
  • The two have been bailed to appear at a future time.

Security Measures and Impact

Increased security measures were introduced in the House of Commons after the device was found. Audio tours and escorted visits were cancelled, and there was reduced access to the main hall.

The House of Lords took the same decision to reduce access to the their debating area “for safety reasons.”

The spokesperson added, “Enquiries remain ongoing, and we continue to keep the parliamentary officials up to date with our probe.”

Seriousness of the Event

The event is being regarded as grave as it constitutes a major breach of legislative safety. This device was found while numerous guards based in the parliamentary area were on strike over pay and conditions.

Consequently, visitors were prohibited from the legislative grounds. Labor representatives explained that the work stoppage proceeded due to cutbacks in holiday time, stagnant pay, and an wage disparity based on race.
