UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman containing several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate souls, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes depict the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

A World of Personal Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
